Super Wild Card Weekend Matchups: Quick Picks

We are finally here. The beginning of the 2023 NFL Playoffs kicking off with Super Wild Card Weekend

Lots of exciting matchups to talk about including some regular season rematches, divisional battles, and young quarterbacks taking the big stage for the first time in their early NFL careers

I usually break down the matchup within the matchup and discuss who has the edge in specific departments on both sides of the ball so I’ll stick with that as we break down each of the six games

Let’s get started

An NFC West battle is how we start Super Wild Card weekend when the Seahawks travel to Santa Clara to take on the 49ers. Seattle had to survive overtime to beat the Rams and get help from Detroit to make the postseason while the 49ers have been the most consistent team in the NFL. This should be a good game to watch on Saturday

When the 49ers run the ball, advantage: 49ERS – Seattle still has the worst run defense in the league and now they have to stop Christian McCaffrey and potentially Deebo Samuel in the Shanahan run game system

When the 49ers pass the ball, advantage: 49ERS – Seattle does have a good secondary, but with Samuel’s speed back and more help in the pass game I can see Brock Purdy taking some shots and exposing this Seattle defense

When the Seahawks run the ball, advantage: 49ERS – There’s too many big guys up front for the 49ers that can shut down Kenneth Walker. I just don’t think Seattle’s line can create holes in the run game consistently

When the Seahawks pass the ball, advantage: SEAHAWKS – Geno has balled out lately with Lockett and Metcalf, but he’ll need all the protection he can get against Bosa and company

Special Teams, advantage: 49ERS – Too much speed with returners and more consistent kicking from Robbie Gould

How can the Seahawks win this game: Win the battle of the trenches and get takeaways

How can the 49ers win this game: Defend the pass well enough on defense

PREDICTION: I can see Seattle keeping this close for maybe a half before the 49ers let loose the dogs up front and overwhelm Seattle’s offense. I also think Brock Purdy will play a turnover free game in this one with Shanahan’s run first offense that can slice up the Seahawks defense. 49ers win this one 30-17

Boy, this is a fun one to watch on Saturday. Justin Herbert vs Trevor Lawrence, Joey Bosa vs Travon Walker, Chargers vs Jaguars. Lots of young talent on both rosters, and it will be exciting to watch both quarterbacks take the big stage

When the Jaguars run the ball, advantage: JAGUARS – The Chargers are still one of the worst rush defenses in the NFL and I could see Travis Etienne having another big game

When the Jaguars pass the ball, advantage: CHARGERS – The Chargers secondary matches up well with the Jags receivers and I think Joey Bosa will make noise against a Jags o-line that’s a little thin at tackle

When the Chargers run the ball, advantage: JAGUARS – Not only do the Chargers stink at stopping the run, they can’t run the ball themselves. Jacksonville has gotten better at taking away the run in the last few games. Think this edge goes to Jacksonville

When the Chargers pass the ball, advantage: CHARGERS – If Mike Williams is healthy, it’s a huge boost to Herbert in the pass game and we’ve seen the Jaguars struggle against teams that can air it out. Tough matchup for Jacksonville’s secondary

Special Teams. advantage: JAGUARS – I still don’t know if I can trust the Chargers to make a clutch kick if needed

How can the Chargers win this game: Run the ball and get after Trevor Lawrence

How can the Jaguars win this game: Force Herbert into turnovers and score touchdowns in the red zone

PREDICTION: This is tough. I like both quarterbacks and I love their weaponry, but I think Doug Pederson’s experience in the postseason will help the Jaguars to victory and as much as I love the Chargers I don’t know if they can run the ball on Jacksonville, it’ll put a lot of pressure on Herbert to make plays, tough environment in Jacksonville. I like the Jags 34-31 in the home upset

The Dolphins must be a cursed franchise. They got into the playoffs by beating the Jets but now have to go to Buffalo with their third string QB, a limited receiving core, and a defense that has struggled as of late. Jeez

When the Bills run the ball, advantage: DOLPHINS – I give the edge to Miami because they’ve been one of the best run defenses in the league for a while now and we still don’t know the Bills full potential when they get their backs going

When the Bills pass the ball, advantage: BILLS – Miami plays too aggressive on defense way too much Andrew this opens up a lot of opportunities for Josh Allen and the explosive Buffalo offense

When the Dolphins run the ball, advantage: BILLS – Miami might have to turn to Salvon Ahmed to be their back against a Bills run defense that continues to improve

When the Dolphins pass the ball, advantage: BILLS – Can Skylar Thompson take shots down the field against Buffalo’s healthy secondary? Can he even get it that far to Waddle and Hill?

Special Teams, advantage: BILLS – Nyheim Hines just became a potential x-factor on special teams for the Bills in the return game

How can the Dolphins win this game: Run the ball…. a lot. Get stops on defense

How can the Bills win this game: No turnovers on offense and stop the run on defense

PREDICTION: I’m sorry but I cannot see the Dolphins going to Buffalo with Thompson at QB and winning this game. I think Miami’s defense will keep it close, but not enough offense this time. The cinderella story ends in Buffalo for the Dolphins. Bills win 38-13

The Vikings beat the Giants on a 61 yard field goal by Greg Joseph three weeks ago. It now becomes a rematch in the playoffs back in Minneapolis with the Giants seeking a little revenge on the Vikings. Should be a great matchup

When the Vikings run the ball, advantage: GIANTS – I think the Giants front seven can make some noise and disrupt Minnesota’s ground attack with Dalvin Cook. They just have to get him down quickly

When the Vikings pass the ball, advantage: VIKINGS – Unless the Giants can permanently take away Justin Jefferson, its hard to see Kirk Cousins not being able to pick apart the Giants defense. Pass rush for New York will be key

When the Giants run the ball, advantage: GIANTS – Saquon and Daniel Jones ran through Minnesota’s defense in round one. I think they can do it again as the Vikings defense has not improved

When the Giants pass the ball, advantage: VIKINGS – Unless the Giants get Kenny Golladay more involved, they don’t have a downfield threat in the pass game to challenge Minnesota’s secondary

Special Teams: DRAW – Both have good kickers and good returners. Edge could go either way

How can the Giants win this game: Gotta get the passing game going and get after Kirk Cousins

How can the Vikings win this game: Take away the run and try not to fall down 34-0 at halftime (just sayin)

PREDICTION: UPSET OF THE WEEK: The Giants were in that game a few weeks ago. I think they’ll make plays on defense, Daniel Jones will not turn the ball over, Saquon has another big game. I’m gonna take the Giants and say that Minnesota’s magical season runs out of sand in the hourglass. Giants upset the Vikings 24-20

Round 3 of Ravens-Bengals hinges on the health and safety of Lamar Jackson. If he can’t go and Tyler Huntley can’t go, rookie Anthony Brown will make his second straight start against Cincinnati. Talk about history repeating itself, the Ravens were in a similar situation last year and didn’t make the postseason. Can they defy the odds and take down the reigning AFC Champions?

When the Bengals run the ball, advantage: RAVENS – Baltimore’s run defense is still a problem for the Bengals offense. They need Joe Mixon to get going

When the Bengals pass the ball, advantage: BENGALS – Joe Burrow has lit up the Ravens in the past two home matchups. Baltimore’s secondary can’t hold its own against the Bengals stacked receiving core. Ravens have to find a way to shut it down

When the Ravens run the ball, advantage: RAVENS – This will get boosted if Lamar comes back, but the Ravens strength is their run game. Needs to explode in Game 3 against the Bengals

When the Ravens pass the ball, advantage: BENGALS – Anthony Brown was still sacked four times and threw two picks in Game 2 despite throwing for 286 yards. Baltimore has to protect whoever’s under center and take some shots down the field

Special Teams: DRAW – Tucker and McPherson are two very clutch kickers and neither team has a good return game. Might be the x-factor in the matchup

How can the Ravens win this game: Depends on who’s at quarterback but it comes down to passing on offense

How can the Bengals win this game: Run the ball, stop the run. That simple

PREDICTION: I’m expecting Lamar not to play so I will take the Bengals for the same reason as the Bills. I can’t see the Ravens doing anything in the pass game that makes me think they can win. This will certainly be a fistfight to the end, but the Bengals pull it out 28-20 in a close one

It was Week 1 when Tampa dominated Dallas in Big D in their previous matchup. Round 2 is now a Wild Card game in Tampa with the Bucs and Cowboys sliding a bit. Tampa escaped Carolina to win the division while Dallas has dropped two of its last four games. Which team will find its mojo in the postseason?

When the Bucs run the ball, advantage: BUCS – Playoff Lenny and Rachaad White with have a big games against a struggling Cowboys run defense

When the Bucs pass the ball, advantage: COWBOYS – Tampa Bay is thin up front and while this is potentially a Tom Brady legacy game, Micah Parsons and the Dallas front seven might be able to keep him quiet

When the Cowboys run the ball, advantage: COWBOYS – Much like Tampa, Dallas has a two headed monster at running back but both Zeke and Pollard have got to get a good rhythm to get past this Bucs defense

When the Cowboys pass the ball, advantage: BUCS – I don’t have a lot of confidence in Dal Prescott right now and he’ll have to make plays against an experienced Buccaneers defense

Special Teams, advantage: COWBOYS – Kavontae Turpin could prove key on returns while the Bucs don’t have that threat yet

PREDICTION: I’m gonna pick the Cowboys, but I’m not as confident about it. The only problem I have with Tampa is their offensive line. Dallas beat them up in Week 1 when they were sort of healthy, now they’re even thinner at that position in the playoffs. Close, low scoring, a battle to the end, but I will take the Cowboys 21-17 over Tampa because of their pass rush

The Best Performances and Bad Goats of Week 18

With the Damar Hamlin situation unfolding around the league during the Monday night game last week, I felt it best to not post my picks or my performances and goats of last week. With everything back to normal-ish for now, here are the best performances and bad goats in the final week of regular season

As always, we start with our best performances of last week

  1. The Buffalo Bills – That whole game just felt like a storybook ending. The Bills used two kick return TDs and enough big plays from Josh Allen to defeat the Patriots and show honor and love to a broken teammate. Just feels right that they lead off the statement draft
  2. Doug Pederson (Jacksonville) – It wasn’t easy for the Jaguars, but Doug Pederson coached his team to a division clinching win over Tennessee. Trevor Lawrence played very well and the Jags defense made a critical play late to salvage the division title. I do think Pederson leading Jacksonville from worst to first will give him coach of the year consideration
  3. Dan Campbell (Detroit) – America’s team made the biggest statement on Sunday night to the Packers: “If we can’t go to the playoffs, you won’t be going either.” Jamaal Williams broke Barry Sanders Lions record for most touchdown runs in a single season, the Lions got two big turnovers on defense, and had guts of steel on the last drive of the game with creative play calls and ended the Packers season on their own turf. The NFC should be fortunate that the stumbling Seahawks got in instead of Detroit, but something tells me we haven’t heard the last of Dan Campbell and the Lions
  4. Mike Tomlin (Pittsburgh) – The Steelers are the Lions of the AFC. Everyone should be fortunate that they didn’t get in either because of Mike Tomlin and his continuous coaching legacy. 16 years of coaching, 16 years of non-losing seasons in Pittsburgh. The second he retires, he should go straight to the hall of fame. The Steelers ended the year with a 28-14 victory over Cleveland which included seven sacks and two interceptions and Kenny Pickett finishing the regular season on a high note.
  5. Joe Mixon (Cincinnati) – Joe Mixon’s celebration with the coin flip told you everything you needed to know about this game. The Bengals clinched the AFC North and will be hosting the rematch against the banged up Baltimore Ravens. Cincy raced out to a 24-7 lead at halftime and used a strong defensive effort in the 2nd half to stave off Baltimore. Hopefully the rematch is a little closer for us football fans
  6. Geno Smith (Seattle) – The Seahawks won’t give a lot of fans confidence going into the playoffs, but it was nice to see Geno Smith play a great game in the home finale against Aaron Donald and the Rams defense, especially on the game clinching drive. The Seahawks will need Geno to play just like that if they are to have any chance against the 49ers

Time for the Bad Goats of Week 18.

  1. Josh Dobbs (Tennessee) – Not that Dobbs was that bad during the game against Jacksonville and I do think Todd Downing should’ve done a better job coordinating the offense, it just comes down to the last play. 4th and long, plenty of time to throw it, and you check it down to the running back? There was a guy open past the sticks and Dobbs had time to find him on a scramble. Just a bad decision and it cost the Titans the game
  2. Lovie Smith (Houston) – I’m just curious as to why you would go for two knowing that the #1 pick is in your back pocket. Just why? Certainly cost the Texans the top pick and Smith’s job
  3. Nick Sirianni (Philadelphia) – The Eagles played everyone and somehow still only won by three points against the JV Giants on Sunday. What was the goal after halftime, Coach? I’m not confident in saying Philly is the best team in the NFC field at the moment and hopefully we get the team that was ripping people apart all season in the next round
  4. Brandon Staley (LA Chargers) – Much like the Eagles, the Chargers played everyone and ended up losing not just the game to the Broncos, but Mike Williams as well. The Chargers learned that they were locked into the #5 seed after the Ravens-Bengals game. Not exactly sure that that was a smart move by Coach Staley and we’ll see if this impacts the Chargers in Jacksonville on Saturday
  5. Aaron Rodgers (Green Bay) – Sorry, Aaron, but this one’s on you. Sacked twice, threw a crucial pick at the end of the game, and threw for only 200 yards against one of the worst defenses in the NFL. Now after three years of walking off his home field without a trophy, is he going to walk away? I think it’s pretty likely
  6. The Dallas Cowboys offense – This is a unit that has reached its peak at the midway point of the season. You can’t win games with only 192 yards of total offense (64 total rushing yards btw) against a Commanders defense that has softened up the last couple weeks. I know I’m not high on Philadelphia right now, but I’m certainly not high on Dallas’s offense heading into Monday’s matchup with Tampa Bay

The Best Performances and Bad Goats of Week 16

With only two more weeks left in the regular season and the playoff picture starting to take full form, the performances of teams and players will get more and more clutch or clutch-less. So we are back with the best and the worst of Week 16 in the NFL Season.

As always, we kickstart this segment with our best performances of Week 16. Who shined this weekend in the NFL

  1. Baker Mayfield (LA Rams) – The Rams may be out of the playoff picture, but it was nice to see a complete game from their offense and from Baker Mayfield against a good Broncos defense. 24/28 for 230 yards and two touchdowns for Mayfield, and this felt personal given how he played last Christmas in Green Bay with three interceptions that cost the Browns. Mayfield may have given the Rams a solid backup option for next season with the victory and the performance
  2. Tom Brady (Tampa Bay) – The GOAT does it again. It wasn’t a pretty game for Tom Brady with two bad interceptions, but the game winning drive proves he’s still pretty clutch. 6/6 on the drive with two big completions to Mike Evans and Russell Gage that led to Ryan Succop’s game winning field goal in Arizona. The Bucs will need more out of Brady if they are to win the NFC South next week against the Panthers
  3. The Carolina Panthers RB’s – Speaking of the Panthers, they had a dominant performance on the ground against a Lions defense that stood up the Jets last week. 320 total yards rushing for the Panthers offense, including a career high 165 yards from Donta Foreman. Chuba Hubbard also ran for 120 yards in the win. The Panthers can still win the NFC South if they win out, a phrase none of us thought we’d be saying at the start of the season
  4. Nick Bosa (San Francisco) – Bosa made another case for defensive player of the year in the 49ers big win over the Commanders. Bosa accounted for seven tackles (five solo, two assists), two of which were tackles for a loss, and a strip sack. With an improving offense and a defense that can get after you and force turnovers, the 49ers are the most dangerous team in the NFC (yes, over the Eagles)
  5. Devin Singletary (Buffalo) – This is what the Bills need to do to take some pressure off Josh Allen. I’ve been saying this all year, and it came to fruition yesterday in a solid second half for Buffalo. After Allen’s two turnovers in the first half, the Bills gave Singletary his carries and it was enough to get the win. Singletary accounted for 106 yards on 12 carries (11.3 yards per carry) and a long TD run for the Bills. Huge win for Buffalo as they stay atop the AFC
  6. Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City) – What can’t Patrick Mahomes do at this point? Mahomes threw for over 220 yards and two touchdowns with no turnovers and had one of the most ridiculous rushing touchdowns I’ve ever seen. The Chiefs are still a great team and it will still come down to them or the Bills for the AFC’s top spot

Hate to be negative but it’s time to look at our biggest goats of the week

  1. Tua Tagovailoa (Miami) – More like Tua Turntheballovah. It’s embarrassing at this point with Tua and this Dolphins team. Three interceptions on the day for Tua, the first two led to go ahead field goals for the Packers while the other one was the game loser. And it’s how they were thrown that do it for me. They were not even close to the intended target. Overthrown, under thrown, off target throw. It’s just awful for the Dolphins, now they have to go to New England in the cold and even though the Pats are not that good anymore, it won’t be an easy game
  2. Russell Wilson (Denver) – What is there to say about how horrific this season has gone for the Broncos. Wilson threw two bad interceptions that led to Rams touchdowns to start the game, then threw another one that became an 85 yard pick six at the end of the game. Then the altercation with him and a few players. Nothing went right for the Broncos this season and it all piled up on Sunday. The good news is Nathaniel Hackett is gone, so maybe they’ll be better next season
  3. Derek Carr (Las Vegas) – I didn’t expect the Raiders to win in Pittsburgh following the death of Franco Harris, but Carr was the main reason why they lost that close game. Three interceptions, but the one at the end of the game was the worst of the trio. He missed that throw by a mile and must’ve thought his receiver was in black and yellow gear. Brutal loss for the Raiders… again, and that falls on Derek Carr who they might move on from after this season
  4. Rhamondre Stephenson (New England) – Back to back games where Rhamondre Stephenson makes a critical turnover late in the game. The game really falls on Matt Patricia (again) for his incompetence as an offensive play caller, but you can’t fumble on the five yard line with a chance to win the game. Cost the Patriots another winnable game against Cincinnati after their epic collapse in Las Vegas last week
  5. Zach Wilson (NY Jets) – We sure this is the #2 overall pick from last season? Wilson has been nothing but bad in his relief efforts of Mike White, and last Thursday might’ve been the last time he takes the field in a Jets uniform. He was 9/18 for 92 yards and a pick (should’ve thrown three more), but none of the throws he made were good. They were off target, under thrown, and out of reach of the receivers. Horrible loss for the Jets and for Zach Wilson, as Mike White steps back into the starter role when the Jets head to Seattle in a pivotal game this Sunday
  6. Malik Willis and Todd Downing (Tennessee) – The Titans have been plagued by injuries on offense, but when you have a duel threat guy as your quarterback you have to open up the playbook a little bit in the run game. Downing has earned his goat horns the last few weeks for this sorry excuse of an offense, but Malik Willis isn’t doing the Titans any favors by throwing for 99 yards and two picks. The Titans are done, and will be a first round exit in the postseason if they somehow get in

Hope everyone had a nice holiday!

NFL Playoff Picture and Week 16 Matchups: Quick Picks

We’re down to three weeks left in the NFL Season and at Christmas time, most teams’ fight to the playoffs become Crunchmas time.

Let’s take a look at both playoff pictures before diving into this week’s matchups

AFC DIVISION LEADERS: Buffalo is in and can clinch the AFC East with a victory in Chicago, the Chiefs have won the West, the Bengals can secure a playoff spot this week, while the Titans are trying to survive in the South

AFC WILD CARD: Ravens slip in division, but still alive in wild card race, while the Dolphins and Chargers are still in the mix

IN THE HUNT: Jets and Pats both took tough hits last week, while Jacksonville controls its fate in the South…. plus the Raiders?

NFC DIVISIONAL LEADERS: Eagles can win top seed this week, Vikings and 49ers both won divisions, while the Bucs are doing whatever they can to hold on to the NFC South without falling apart

NFC WILD CARD: All NFC East teams, but the Commanders are in the most trouble

IN THE HUNT: Here come the Lions, while Seattle and Green Bay are still in the mix. Carolina and Atlanta can still win the division

Okay, let’s get into the matchups for Week 15. With a few weeks left in the season, I’m only diving into games that have playoff meaning. Here’s some quicker picks for this weekend’s games that don’t matter that much

Saints @ Browns: Browns (-3.5)
Raiders @ Steelers: Steelers (-2.5)
Broncos @ Rams: Rams (+2.5)

Let’s dive in. RETRO LOGOS FOR CHRISTMAS!

PLAYOFF IMPICATIONS: Jacksonville controls its own fate in the AFC South, while the Jets are still alive in the Wild Card race

Trevor Lawrence vs Zach Wilson. The top two picks of last year’s draft going head to head for the second time in the last two seasons. Which QB will outduel the other in this big Thursday night showdown

PICK: No Travon Walker, Lawrence is a little beat up, I think the Jets have a better defense. I will take the Jets in a close one because of their defense and I do think Zach Wilson will play his best game. Jets in a close one

PLAYOFF IMPLICATIONS: Buffalo wins the AFC East with a win OR a Dolphins loss

Josh Allen vs Justin Fields. Excellent quarterback battle in Chicago… if Justin Fields had a more reliable offense

PICK: Buffalo wins this game, but Justin Fields will keep this game close against Buffalo’s defense. I do think it’s closer than eight with his playmaking ability, but Josh Allen does enough to win the game. Bills win in the cold in Chicago

PLAYOFF IMPLICATIONS: Tennessee still leads the AFC South, and a win would be helpful to keep it that way

The Titans haven’t played well the last few weeks while the Texans have given the Cowboys and Chiefs fits. This could be closer than you think

PICK: I think we’re in for another gut-wrenching Texans loss in this one just based off the last few weeks, but this won’t be a high scoring game because I don’t think Tennessee’s offense is explosive enough to put this one away. Give me Tennessee in a low scoring game and I think Houston will cover

PLAYOFF IMPLICATIONS: Cincinnati can keep control of the North with a win while the Pats are fighting to stay alive in the playoffs

Joe Burrow vs Mac Jones would be a better game if Matt Patricia was not on the sidelines in New England

PICK: The line should be bigger for this game. Bengals defense is banged up but Joe Burrow has too many weapons and the Patriots offense is too predictable. Bengals win and cover by a touchdown at least

The surging Lions, in pursuit of a playoff spot for the first time in six years, head to Carolina to face a Panthers team still hoping to catch the Bucs for the NFC South title

PICK: I just think the Lions are playing more consistent on the offensive side of the ball and the Panthers aren’t so I will take the Lions in a close one over the Panthers in Charlotte

The Giants will be walking into a winter whiteout in Minneapolis when they visit the Vikings for a big NFC battle. Minnesota is trying to hold onto that #2 spot in the NFC while the Giants look to lock up a playoff spot with a win and some help later in the day

PICK: I like the Vikings, but I do think the Giants will keep this game close because the Vikings defense is one of the most inconsistent defenses in the NFL. Should be a shootout, but I like Kirk and JJettas and the Vikings to pull this one out

The Falcons and Ravens are falling apart, so both teams need a crucial win with playoff spots fading away this weekend

PICK: Dunno if I can fully trust Desmond Ridder on the road and not against that Ravens defense. Tyler Huntley will play a better game than last week, and I think the Ravens have a little more offense than the Falcons. Ravens win this one by a touchdown

The Chiefs are patiently waiting for the Bills to fall again in order to take the #1 seed, but they’ll face a desperate Seahawks team fighting for their playoff lives on Saturday afternoon. Will they finally play a complete game after some close calls?

PICK: This is a shootout. Mahomes will outplay the Seahawks offense, but I do think Geno Smith and Kenneth Walker will score on this Kansas City defense. Chiefs win, Seahawks cover

Chase Young returns for the Commanders, coming off a bad loss at home to the Giants last week, as they head to the Bay Area to face-off with Brock Purdy and the red-hot 49ers

PICK: I think the 49ers will sleepwalk a little bit, a defensive game at Levi’s, but I don’t have a lot of confidence in Washington’s offense after last week and I don’t know how they’ll respond after a brutal loss last week. San Francisco wins, Washington covers

Jalen Hurts is out for this big NFC matchup with the Cowboys, so Gardner Minshew leads the Birds into Big D looking to lock up the division and the top spot in the conference on Saturday against the already playoff bound Cowboys

PICK: UPSET OF THE WEEK: Yes Jalen Hurts is out, but I really don’t think that changes the Eagles offense. But regardless, Philly’s defense is just much better now than the previous matchup against the run. The Eagles get the upset in Dallas with their defense and Minshew making a play late to win it

Rodgers vs Tua, playoff implications, both teams desperate for a big win. Good start to the Christmas slate of games

PICK: I do think the Dolphins will get back on track after a long road trip. Tua will make enough plays and I think the Dolphins defense will do enough to shut down the Packers offense. Dolphins win a high scoring game

The Bucs don’t look like a playoff team and I think the Cardinals are on the verge of a reset. Sadly, this game makes the list because the Bucs are still fighting to hold on to the NFC South

PICK: If Tom Brady can’t beat Trace McSorley, he should just retire. I like Tampa Bay big in this one

The Chargers could be playing for a playoff spot in this one if they get help over the weekend, while the Colts have checked out this season after their second half collapse in Minneapolis last week

PICK: Justin Herbert will make enough plays on offense and I have regained my faith in this Chargers defense so I will take the Chargers on the road in Indy on Monday night

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

The Good and Bad of NFL Week 15

As we dwindle down to the final stretch of the regular season, performances of teams or individuals will get better or worse. Case in point, earlier this week. some great performances and some of the dumbest plays of teams and individuals

We’re gonna start, of course, with our biggest statements of Week 15

  1. Kayvon Thibodeaux (NY Giants) – Arguably the best game of the season by the Giants first round pick from Oregon. 12 tackles in the game, three of which were for a loss, nine were solo tackles, one sack, two forced fumbles (one was returned for a touchdown), and making a big goal line tackle on Taylor Heinicke at the end of the game. Huge primetime with for Thibodeaux and the Giants to keep their playoff hopes alive
  2. Doug Pederson (Jacksonville) – I would really like to see the Jags in the playoffs because they have a chance to do damage. Doug Pederson has done a tremendous job with this team despite them being inconsistent. Last week would’ve been classic Jaguars against the Cowboys, down 17 so it’s time to fold the tents. Pederson’s team rallied from behind to take it to overtime and won it because great quarterback play, clutch catches by receivers, and great defense down the stretch including the game winning pick six. With his coaching pedigree, I wouldn’t want to see the Jags in the playoffs
  3. The Los Angeles Chargers defense – What has happened to the Chargers defense the last two weeks? Back to back performances of holding a team to less than twenty points, and they’re still not even at full strength yet. Against the Titans, the Chargers accounted for four sacks, a key interception, and a forced fumble at the end of the game. Good win for the Chargers to keep their playoff chances alive
  4. The Buffalo Bills – It was a good team win overall for the Bills at home against a desperate Dolphins team. When it got late and the Dolphins got ahead, the Bills relied on their run game with Josh Allen and defense to score the final ten points of the game and get the victory. Wasn’t the best of statements made by Buffalo, but they needed that win to separate themselves in the division
  5. Mike Tomlin (Pittsburgh) – I was throughly impressed with the Steelers last week against Carolina’s stout defense. 12-16 on third down, Mitch Trubisky was efficient, Najee Harris was excellent in the run game along with Jaylen Warren. Impressive showing by the Steelers and it reflects Mike Tomlin. He’s not gonna take his first losing season without swinging

Now let’s get to our biggest Goats of the Week and the Worst Performances of Week 15

  1. The New England Patriots – Belichick, Patricia, Mac Jones, the defense, especially Jakobi Meyers. Who doesn’t get blamed for that fiasco in Las Vegas last week? Mac Jones was horrible, the coaches clearly don’t trust him to throw the ball down the field, but what the hell was Jakobi Meyers thinking? YOU ARE GOING TO GO TO OVERTIME IF YOU GO DOWN!!! sigh. Another inexplicable, inexcusable loss for the New England Patriots. If they go to the playoffs, they will be a first round exit
  2. Noah Brown (Dallas) – If a pass hits you right between the numbers and it’s in stride and you don’t catch it, it’s on you. Brown not only didn’t catch the ball in overtime, but it went right into the hands of Rayshawn Jenkins who took it the distance for the pick six that ended the game. It’s that moment that lands Noah Brown on the Goat list
  3. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers offense – What a collapse. Botched punt, two picks by Brady, then two fumbles that just took sucked all the life out of the Buccaneers and led to a horrible collapse. The Bucs might win the division, but they won’t last long against the field in the NFC
  4. The Indianapolis Colts – Up 33-0 at halftime and you still lose the game. Yikes. That goes on everybody and that might signal the end of Jeff Saturday at the end of the season. That’s brutal. Not as brutal as 28-3 in the Super Bowl
  5. The officials in the Giants-Commanders game – First off, Terry McLaurin was set at the line of scrimmage and that was a dumb flag that got thrown. Then how in the world does that last play not get called for pass interference? Curtis Samuel is getting mugged in the back of the end of the end zone and there’s no flag? Inexcusable

NFL Week 15 Matchups: Quick Picks

Everyone’s out of their bye so everyone is playing this week in Week 15

Let’s take a look at the playoff picture before we get started

AFC: Buffalo has the tiebreaker over KC for the #1, Baltimore has the tie over Cincinnati for the North, Tennessee sits at #4

WILD CARD: Cincy at #5, Miami at #6, with the Pats coming in at #7

IN THE HUNT: Chargers and Jets still with above average records while the Jags still can win the South. Raiders idk

NFC: Eagles in command, Vikings slipping, here come the 49ers, and the Bucs are running out of breathing room

WILD CARD: An NFC East party, but it could be broken up soon with Giants-Commanders this weekend

IN THE HUNT: Seattle is still alive, the Lions are coming, and the Panthers and Falcons have a chance at the NFC South title

Let’s get to the matchups for Week 15

The Seahawks horrible run defense will be put to the test against the 49ers run game. No Deebo will limit their offensive firepower, but only to a degree

PICK: Kenneth Walker probably won’t play, if he does he won’t be 100%, and even without Deebo I just think the 49ers will overwhelm Seattle with their run game. 49ers win a close one in Seattle on Thursday

Can the Vikings defense finals figure it out against a limited Colts offense? Or will Jeff Saturday push his team to victory in Minneapolis?

PICK: I think the Colts will cover the four point spread, but give me the Vikings. I just think the defense will make a play late to win the game even though the Colts will score some points. Vikings win, but I like Indy +4

We’re still waiting to see if Deshaun Watson is back to his old self, but the Ravens are down to their third string quarterback and have key injuries in key spots

PICK: I don’t know if the Ravens offense will have enough to go up against a good Browns defense and I think the browns will fix their mistakes from the previous matchup. I like Cleveland, at home, in a close one

Snow in the forecast in Buffalo on Saturday night is not good news for a Dolphins team that has already dropped two straight and are falling apart fast. You gotta also think that this game is personal for the Bills given their last matchup

PICK: I think Buffalo wins this one. Elements favor them, the Dolphins do too much pressure on defense which leaves receivers open downfield, and the Bills defense is improving. Buffalo wins this one by ten points

Oh, dear

PICK: Kansas City wins big. I don’t think Houston will have another performance like last week against this team. I like the Chiefs to cover

This is the most optimistic I’ve felt about the Panthers in a long time, while the Steelers are on the verge of Mike Tomlin’s first ever losing season

PICK: UPSET OF THE WEEK: I’m gonna remain less optimistic about the Panthers and see how they do. While I do think they match up well with the Steelers offense, I think Pittsburgh’s defense will play the better game. Pittsburgh gets the upset

The Jets might not have to outscore the red hot Lions but given the way the last few weeks have been, they’ll need Mike White to play a better game this week than his last two games combined

PICK: I don’t like this but I’m gonna take the Jets because they’re at home and they have a better defense. I do think the Lions hang around in this one though

Justin Fields could be Superman in this game and it still might not be enough to give the Bears a win over the NFL’s top team

PICK: I like the Eagles to win by ten points or more in this one. The Bears offense won’t be able to run the football against the Eagles defense and the Bears defense gives up too many big plays. Eagles win this one convincingly

The Falcons turn to Desmond Ridder when they take on the Saints in this old NFC South rivalry. Atlanta is still in play for the South title, but the Saints can play spoiler if the win this game

PICK: I do like the Saints at home, off the bye week, and this defense to get enough stops to win this one. I think Ridder will play a great game, but I just think the Saints d-line will make it hard on him with constant pressure. Saints at home (ATL +4)

The Cowboys are coming off one of their worst wins of the seasons against the worst team in the league, while the Jags got a big divisional win to keep their AFC South chances alive. Big game to wrap up the 1pm window

PICK: The Jags are too inconsistent and the Cowboys defense travels well, plus the injury to Travon Walker could limit the Jags defense. I like the Cowboys in a close one, but I like Jacksonville to cover

This matchup would’ve been a lot more intriguing if the Raiders were not this bad

PICK: I am taking the Patriots, but I’m not extremely confident about this pick. Like last week, the Pats gameplan on offense is bad and they will have to be carried by their defense. But I can’t trust McDaniels at all. Pats in a low scoring game in Vegas

This is not a fun game at all given how bad these two teams are

PICK: I’ll just take the Broncos at home but I think Arizona will cover. Could have shootout potential if the Broncos can score with AZ

The Chargers are in need of another big home victory, while the Titans need to find a way to snap out of this slump they’ve been on the last few weeks

PICK: I was leaning Tennessee, but I think I’m gonna take the Chargers because of the lack of pass rush on Tennessee’s defense and the Chargers not having to worry about a passing game too much. I like the Chargers in this one

The Buccaneers are running out of room in the NFC South while the Bengals have their foot on the gas. I still think this should be a great game given the two quarterbacks we’ll see on the field

PICK: The Bucs can’t protect, they can’t run the football, they’re down a few corners in the secondary. I think the Bengals and Joe Burrow keep rolling and win this game by ten points. Bengals get the win in Tampa

These two teams played to a tie two weeks ago, but the Giants are coming off a swift kick in the ass by the Eagles and the Commanders are coming out of a bye. This should be an interesting game with playoff spots on the line

PICK: My concern with the Giants is their lack of receivers while Washington is healthy now on defense, especially up front with Chase Young back. I like the Commanders at home by a touchdown over the Giants

The Packers are still alive for a playoff spot in the NFC, while the Rams turn to Baker Mayfield once again in an attempt to salvage what’s left of their season

PICK: I like the Packers to win and the Rams to cover. See ya

The Good and the Bad of NFL Week 14

Quarterbacks balled out against good defenses while others didn’t deliver in gotta have it games. So let’s take a look at our good and bad performances of Week 14

The Best Performances of Week 14

  1. Justin Herbert (LA Chargers) – Justin Herbert shut everyone up on Sunday night against the Dolphins. 367 yards, one touchdown, no turnovers for the Chargers in a must win game over Miami. Now they need to build off it because we’ve seen inconsistency from the Chargers that make us not believe in them, so they need more good performances from Herbert and that Chargers defense to keep them alive
  2. Brock Purdy (San Francisco) – Not so Mr. Irrelevant anymore, are you? Purdy dominated Tom Brady in his homecoming game going 16/21, 185 yards, three total scores. I expected the 49ers to win, but that was an ass-kicking plain and simple. They’re in the upper class in the NFC
  3. The Carolina Panthers defense – Steve Wilks should be the next head coach considering where the Panthers are at right now. Sam Darnold didn’t turn the ball over and the run game was solid, but this defense is finally living up to my expectations. Three sacks, two interceptions, physical football from this defense… AND THEY STILL COULD WIN THE DIVISION!!! How crazy is that given the tumultuous season they’ve already had?
  4. Trevor Lawrence (Jacksonville) – I am so excited to watch this team next season. Lawrence is becoming that stud at Clemson before our eyes in Jacksonville, and he did it again in Nashville. 368 yards and three scores with no turnovers. Had Jacksonville been a little more consistent, they’d be dangerous in the playoffs (and they still could get there if the Titans fall off a cliff)
  5. The New England Patriots defense – Pats are still alive in the playoff race, for how much longer I don’t know, because of this defense. Six sacks, a scoop and score, and a pick that helped the Patriots get a massive win over the Cardinals. Now, fire Matt Patricia and this team will be great
  6. Jared Goff (Detroit) – Do not let the Lions in the playoffs, NFC. They are getting hot at the right time and Jared Goff balling is the reason why. 330 yards, three touchdowns, no turnovers, and Jameson Williams is healthy now. This team can do damage in the playoffs if they get in

Now let’s do a dive into Week 14’s Goats in a Bad Way

  1. Tua Tagovailoa and Mike McDaniel (Miami) – I’m sorry, but you’re not winning games with only ten pass completions. Tua deserves a little blame, and I think McDaniel does too because I don’t understand why you’re not running the football against one of the worst defenses in the NFL. Get Tyreek involved in the run game if you can’t run with your RB’s. Good luck in the snow next week in Buffalo, Dolphins
  2. Mitch Trubisky (Pittsburgh) – Three turnovers, all of which in Baltimore territory, cost the Steelers points and a victory over their most hated rivals. Yes Pickett got hurt, but Trubisky has gotta be better with the football in those situations
  3. The Minnesota Vikings defense – How does a team, with ten wins, have a negative point differential? That’s now five straight games where the Vikings defense have allowed 400+ yards of offense. You are not going to always win games by outscoring people, and you’re definitely not going to win games if you can’t stop people on defense
  4. Geno Smith (Seattle) – I hate to see Geno regress and I know Kenneth Walker was hurt, but there’s no excuse for those two horrible interceptions. It cost them points and let to points for the Panthers that allowed them to win the game
  5. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers organization – This is not a playoff team. Tom Brady is regressing, they can’t pass protect, they can’t run the ball, and this defense is giving up too many big plays. If the Bucs lose the division to Carolina, a team that was in disarray at the beginning of the season, the Bucs may start their own fire sale
  6. DeAndre Hopkins (Arizona) – Was gonna say Derek Carr, bu DeAndre Hopkins gets blame for the Cardinals losing to the Patriots on Monday night. You cannot be carrying the football like a loaf of bread against the New England defense. Case in point, he fumbles the football and the Patriots end up taking it for a touchdown and basically suck the life out of the Cardinals in that moment. Bad football

NFL Week 14 Matchups: Quick Picks

Let’s jumping the 14th week of the NFL season with the Quick Picks post. Final bye week of the season meaning from this point forward, everyone is in action. This week, only 13 games

BYE:

Matchups:

This is a horrible game. The only thing good about this game is that the Raiders are riding on a three game winning streak, but the Rams have more injuries on their team than QBSN general members. This just isn’t an interesting game

PICK: I’m just gonna take the Raiders because the Rams offense is too injured and I think the Rams don’t have enough people on defense to stop Josh Jacobs. Raiders win and I think they cover too

Oh boy… this will be ugly

PICK: I like Dallas big. Too much on both sides of the ball and Houston doesn’t have a quarterback. Dallas big

This line is tricky. I get that the Lions are red hot, but the Vikings just keep finding ways to win games and they manhandled the Lions last year. This is a tough call

PICK: I’m gonna take the Vikings because I think Justin Jefferson will win some one-on-one matchups in the pass game and the Vikings defense will make some plays against Detroit’s offense. Vikings get the upset

Two really good defenses, but does New York have enough defense to slow down the Eagles diverse offense? Do they have enough horses on the outside to go against Philly’s defense? Can Daniel Jones deliver?

PICK: No, no, and no. Eagles are too good this year to get beat by the Giants again. I think Jalen Hurts will find a way to win a this one. Eagles by ten

The Browns have had the Bengals number the last couple games, including a 32-13 drubbing on a Monday night in Cleveland on Halloween. They’ve won five straight games and eight of the last nine against Cincinnati. Can the Bengals keep rolling after knocking off the Chiefs?

PICK: I think Deshaun Watson will play better in this game, but with Jamarr Chase back for the Bengals I think they’ll win this game. Close, high scoring, but Cincinnati wins. I like the Browns +6

The Ravens and the Steelers renew their rivalry but with Lamar Jackson out, the Ravens will need to find some offense outside of their quarterback. But don’t overlook the Steelers as they’ve won three of their last four and are playing good defense

PICK: I like Kenny Pickett and George Pickens to get back on track and find a way to beat Baltimore. I don’t know how Baltimore’s offense will be without Lamar and it hasn’t been perfect the last two weeks anyway. Give me Pittsburgh

Tennessee is one of those teams that is good but not great. Jacksonville is one of those teams that can be good but just isn’t. This one could be much closer than you think

PICK: I’m not gonna pick the Jaguars outright, but I think they’ll keep it close to cover. I just think Derrick Henry is due for a big game and will keep owning the Jaguars defense so I’ll take the Titans in a close one

The Bills are back in the driver’s seat in the AFC East and the conference as a whole. After a ten day break, the Bills will seek some revenge against the Jets this Sunday. The Jets will be licking their wounds following a backbreaking loss in Minnesota last week

PICK: I like the Jets +9 because of their defense, but I don’t trust Mike White in Orchard Park. I think the Bills will stay balanced on offense and run the ball right down the Jets throat. Josh Allen will also do enough to win. Bills win by a touchdown

This game would’ve been a lot more fun at the beginning of the season

PICK: Chiefs win big. I don’t see how the Broncos defense will keep this game close at all. Chiefs by at least 17 points

The Panthers matchup well with the Seahawks on the defensive side, but can Sam Darnold beat Seattle with his arm?

PICK: UPSET OF THE WEEK: Seattle’s defense has had some holes, Kenneth Walker could be out or not 100%, Panthers defense getting better. I’m gonna pick the upset and say Carolina goes into Seattle and wins. Panthers upset

The 49ers are turning to Mr. Irrelevant, Brock Purdy, to face Tom Brady and the Bucs in his homecoming game this weekend. Brady was wrapping up his college ball at Michigan when Purdy was born. This should be fun

PICK: I don’t care who’s at quarterback for the 49ers, the defense is too good and I don’t think Tampa’s offense is good enough to score with the 49ers. Kyle Shanahan will come up with a good gameplan and get the win at home. 49ers by a TD

This is a great quarterback battle, but the key will be about which QB’s supporting cast will give him the most help

PICK: I don’t think Tua will have two bad games in a row, especially not against the Chargers defense. I don’t trust the Chargers at all on either side of the ball. Dolphins win this game big

The Cardinals should’ve fired Kingsbury during the bye week, and the Patriots should’ve fired Matt Patricia during their ten day break. Which coach is going to help their team win this one?

PICK: Gonna go with the Pats because I just trust Bill Belichick more than Kliff Kingsbury from a coaching standpoint. I think this is a low scoring game, but the Patriots win this one

The Good and Bad of NFL Week 13

There were a lot of heroes and not a lot of zeroes last week in the NFL, but there were certainly some that were newsworthy. Let’s take a look at my Best Performers and Biggest Goats in a Bad Way from Week 13 in the NFL Season

As always, we start with those who played well last week. The Best Performances:

  1. Brock Purdy (San Francisco) – Not easy for a backup quarterback to finish a game, especially a 3rd string quarterback much less the final pick in this year’s draft. But Purdy came in for an injured Jimmy Garoppolo and did a great job giving the 49ers offense some balance. He finished the game going 25/37 for 210 yards and two touchdowns and got the 49ers a big win over a red hot Dolphins team
  2. Joe Burrow (Cincinnati) – Joe Cool was back in Cincy this week in the rematch of the AFC Championship. 25/31, 286 yards, two touchdowns while rushing for 41 yards and a touchdown. The Bengals aren’t afraid to play the Chiefs, and that comes off the energy they get from their superstar quarterback
  3. The Dallas Cowboys defense – You could pick out a number of studs from the Cowboys, but the defensive performance the Cowboys had in the 4th Quarter was the difference. Four turnovers, all of which led to touchdowns, one being a defensive touchdown by Malik Hooker, helped the Cowboys pull away from the Colts on Sunday night. This defense is championship caliber and if they get deep into the playoffs, they’ll be dangerous
  4. Jared Goff and Amon Ra St. Brown (Detroit) – The Lions flat out waxed the Jaguars on Sunday and it was because the offense couldn’t be stopped. Jared Goff and Amon Ra St. Brown were difference makers as both had big games. Goff threw for 340 yards on 31 completions and two TD passes, both of which went to St. Brown who also had 114 yards through the air. That 7th spot is still up for grabs, and I don’t know if anyone wants to play this offense right now as Detroit has won four of their last five and Jameson Williams is slated to come back this week
  5. The Cleveland Browns defense – Yes, it was the Texans, but the offense wasn’t doing much to help the Browns win on Sunday. The defense accounted for four turnovers and two of them were defensive scores. I don’t think Cleveland will make the playoffs, but that’s a confidence boosting win for this Browns team especially on defense
  6. AJ Brown (Philadelphia) – Revenge is usually a dished best served cold, but Brown was too hot to handle for the Titans defense on Sunday in South Philly. Brown had eight catches for 119 yards and two touchdowns against his former teams the Eagles kept on rolling. Best team in the NFL until someone else proves otherwise

Let’s now transition over to the Goats in a Bad Way.

  1. The Indianapolis Colts offense – Blow it up, Jim Irsay, because that was as bad a performance you could ask for on the big stage. Five total turnovers by Indy’s offense, four of them led to touchdowns by the Cowboys, as the Colts were crushed in Big D on Sunday night. I’m sure everyone in Indy was wondering what the hell happened after the game got to within two points. That was hard to watch
  2. Travis Kelce (Kansas City) – He wasn’t involved early in the game and when he did get involved, he was responsible for the biggest mistake the Chiefs made in Cincinnati. The ball gets ripped out of his hands on a crossing route and the Bengals score the go ahead touchdown off it. I know it was ripped out but still, Kelce’s gotta get more involved in the offense to get the Chiefs going these next few games
  3. Tua Tagovailoa (Miami) – You could blame the Dolphins defense for getting carved up by Mr. Irrelevant, but Tua had a bad day. His first half was putrid, missing too many easy throws and turning the ball over, he was sacked three times, including a strip sack touchdown by the 49ers defense that iced the game. Just wasn’t a good game for him but I think he’ll bounce back this Sunday night against the Chargers defense
  4. Brandon Staley (LA Chargers) – Speaking of which, how do the Chargers lose to the Raiders? This wasn’t last year where they had battled back and found a way to tie the game before losing in OT. This was pretty darn bad, and injuries are one thing but the way this team is coached is another. I think if the Chargers don’t make the playoffs, Staley has to go.
  5. The Tennessee Titans offensive line – The Titans couldn’t run the ball on Philadelphia and they really struggled against their pass rush. Tennessee gave up six sacks and only accounted for 87 total rushing yards. I think Tennessee can still win the division, but I don’t think they’ll get far in the playoffs at this rate
  6. The NFL and Tie Games – In a pivotal game between the Giants and the Commanders where you know this could have division and playoff implications, you could at least let the game play out until someone wins. The tie rule is so stupid and should go away if teams are fighting for a playoff spot. Luckily, it’s a division game and we get the rematch in two weeks. Maybe we’ll have a victor in the end

College Football Championship Week: Quick Picks

I am excited to watch these six championship games unfold this weekend. Lots of CFP implications to go around including some New Year’s Six bowl bid implications

Six games, one of which is the Group of 5 game for the NY6 bowl game, and they all have similar implications. Let’s get to it

Rankings reflect the College Football Playoff as of this past Tuesday

USC’s hopes of representing the PAC 12 in the CFP for the first time since 2016 ride on Friday’s championship matchup with Utah, the only team that has beaten USC this season

PICK: This is tough, but I’m gonna go with USC because of Caleb Williams and his dual threat ability. I think Utah was lucky to win last game and they struggle against a good running football team, so I’ll take the Trojans in a high scoring game

Can TCU cap off its perfect season in the purple bowl against Kansas State? They’re gonna have to do everything to stop the run and force Will Howard into passing situations, and then Max Duggan will have to make some plays with his feet

PICK: Closer than the first game between these two teams, but I still think Max Duggan will find a way to win the game for TCU so I’ll take the Horned Frogs in a close game

Battle for a New Year’s 6 bowl bid in the American once again and it features another revenge game as Tulane hosts UCF for the second time in the last four weeks.

PICK: I think Tulane is battle tested, they have a better defense, and I just don’t think UCF is that consistent on offense to pull off an upset a second time. I like Tulane to find a way to win this game by ten points

Given the way LSU lost to A&M last week, I think this line is pretty legit. Only chance LSU has to win is if Harold Perkins causes havoc against Georgia’s offensive line and disrupts Stetson Bennett

PICK: I think this is a personal game for Georgia. Defense wins championships so I’m picking Georgia, with their better defense, to beat a beat up LSU team. I will take the points with LSU and say Georgia wins by two touchdowns

Clemson can still finish in its usual spot, up top the ACC. But UNC, who has lost a couple games in a row, has a great quarterback that can go in there and beat this Clemson defense with his arm. But can UNC’s poor defense stop Will Shipley the run game?

PICK: I think this is a high scoring game, I’m taking the 7.5 with UNC, but I can’t pick against Clemson after what happened last week and I just don’t trust UNC’s defense. Give me Clemson in a close one

Jeff Brohm has won his last three games against AP top 5 teams, Purdue has won three straight to get to their first straight conference championship, but is it enough to beat a high powered Michigan team?

PICK: I like Michigan here because I don’t think Purdue will be able to run the football enough on Michigan’s defense and I think Jim Harbaugh will not let there be a hangover after last week. Michigan wins by 14 points over Purdue
